Romanticism, with its emphasis on emotion and the individual, is a harbinger of the modern era while French Realism portrays the lives of everyday people as the ideals of democracy spread. Among the artists to be discussed will be H. Fuseli, C.D. Friedrich, T. Géricault, F. Church, G. Courbet, and J-F. Millet. A brief introduction to the invention of photography will also be included.
