The Carpatho-Rusyns have existed for over 1,000 years in the Carpathian Mountains in Central Europe. Known as the “People from Nowhere”, their most famous citizen is Andy Warhol. Their language is still not recognized by many nations. There are approximately 700,000 Carpatho-Rusyns who reside in the US today, maintaining their distinctive culture while participating fully in American life. They arrived in the US from 1880-1914 – among that number was my grandmother, Anna. Her story is one of escape, survival, and a family that tells the story of a distinct time in our nation’s history.
