The Pearl Harbor attack in WW II was unquestionably a turning point for United States, but the Pacific theater remained a secondary priority for the FDR administration in comparison to Europe. Annie aims to reexamine the social and military character of the Pacific war and to explore unresolved issues – the impact of colonialism (Western and Japanese), the ethics of warfare (Japanese treatment of POWs and Allied use of atomic weapons), and the origins of the Cold War in WW II (the 1945 Allied plan to divide Korea).
Course dates are October 25, November 1, 8 and 15.
