Slavery is an ancient institution. Beginning ca. 1450, when reasonably reliable voyages to and from sub-Saharan Africa became possible, more than twelve million enslaved Africans were transported to the Americas. We will consider why the Atlantic trade developed and how it operated; the spectrum of slave systems established in the Americas; how slaves endured and resisted bondage; and the rise of anti-slavery movements that challenged the foundations and presumed legitimacy of this ancient institution.
The course meets on November 4 and 11.
