In 1848, John Sutter discovered gold while digging the foundations for his mill on the American River in California. By 1849, 50,000 men had traveled to California to make their fortunes. In Episode 3 of The West, we learn what happened to all who arrived there in the years afterward – Americans, Chinese, Native American tribes, women, entrepreneurs, Spanish-Americans already living there, freed slaves, and Mexicans.
